Science Olympiad Team an Amazing Club by olivier Robillard Spring Valley High School is rich in clubs. One of them is Science Olympiad. The team consists of eleven students and represents S.V.H.S. as it competes against other teams in Rockland County. Each of the students from the S.V.H.S. team participated in at least three events. They worked extremely hard in order to be prepared for the tournaments. Whether it is after school or during school breaks, you’ll always see Science Olympiad students in school trying to create the perfect project for the tournament. Students used their creativity, and were able to create extraordinary things such as: planes, robotic arms, air trajectories, and bridges. They also used their knowledge in science and took tests in events such as: anatomy, chemistry lab, disease detection, green generation, and forensics.
Mohamed Mubashshir, a senior, has been in Science Olympiad since freshman year. “Since I was a kid I always wanted to be an engineer, but participating in that club has taught me the skills needed to excel in this field.” On January 30th , 2016, the team participated in the county-wide tournament. It was a nice adventure for the whole team. Two students, Nancy Tellez and Celso Aragon, won medals. Science Olympiad has won several medals over the years and will definitely win more in the years to come. What makes this team successful is the fact that the students have the liberty to build their projects however they want, as long as it’s within the given rules. S.V.H.S. used a limited amount of materials and mostly their creativity for their projects. This shows how dedicated the students are to participate in the tournament. The advisors play a very important role in this club. They help the students in any way they can and we will always be grateful for their hard work and leadership. “I'm so grateful to be part of Science Olympiad. We are a family, and I couldn’t be more happy to have Ms. Moon and Mrs. Abrahamson as advisors. They believed in me, which made me accomplish things that I would never be able to do before. This club has made me a much more confident person,” said Miche-Love Tirone. A special thank you to Mr. Stilwell, the former advisor of Science Olympiad -- a teacher, a friend, and a father figure. Once a tiger, always a tiger. |
